REVIEW: 2nd Attempt at Benefit They're Real Mascara

Every now and then, I will revisit an old product which did not worked out right for me. I usually do this when I received the product as a gift or as a sample. And that was the story with this product.

It is no secret how much I hate Benefit They're Real mascara. I am not ashamed to admit that I kinda, sorta thrashed it whenever an opportunity comes along, whether it is online or in real life. And then I bought Benefit They're Real Push-up Liner (review here) and received a sample size of this mascara again. I was tempted to toss it or give it away but for some strange reason, I thought to myself let's give it another go! So...I'll just come out and say it....

Benefit They're Real Mascara is actually a decent product...okay fine, it's actually a really good mascara. And there is me in the corner eating my humble pie.

Don't make me do that again, my pride is shattered, kidding. Yes, I retract all my harsh statement about this mascara. I don't know what changed but I actually really like this mascara. Using the sample size, my lashes are beautifully separated and long. It holds the curl decently well and the biggest surprise was, it did not clump with 2 coats of mascara. Wtf?!?! I remembered clearly why I hated this mascara with a passion. It clumps like no other mascara I've ever tried. There was NO WAY I could use 2 coats as the first coat itself cause my lashes to stick together and I ended up looking like I only have 4 eyelashes on each eye. I also had an extreme case of crunchy, spidery lashes and don't even get me started at how many time I nearly gauge my eyes out with that damn sharp bristles. It looks like something from the gladiators' era.

So what happened? Did the one I bought was a dud? After using this sample size, I finally understand why so many people love this mascara, it really did a great job with my lashes. I have been using this nearly everyday and I am really liking it. I hope anyone who hates it as much as I do will give it another try, you might have bought yourself a bad product like I did.

So yes, Benefit They're Real Mascara is worth the hype. Second serving of humble pie please?

  1. How odd.
As you say, the first sample must have been from a faulty batch.

Perhaps you should try it a third time, to make sure that this product is consistently good...?

  2. DEFINITELY NOT saying this is what you meant, but this is why i can't stand first impressions of a product that is then called a review. sometimes a mascara needs to "dry out" a bit and then it works amazingly. i really do like this mascara when i need something that will last, but it only builds volume to a point. it's good though. again, not a criticism of you or anything i promise!! *hugs*

    1. I'm in agreement with you on that hun! First impression is very tricky especially with mascaras. I tried so hard to like the one I bought and I kept trying for months till I finally gave up and threw it away. Hence I was sooo critical about this mascara in the past because it was the first high end mascara I bought and it was a complete flop.

    1. It can be isn't it? But the nevertheless, it is beautiful but so darn hard to take off at the end of the day. I swear I lost a couple of lashes trying to get it off last night. LOL!
