THE MAKEUP EDITION: IS NEW ALWAYS BETTER? KAT VON D STUDDED LIPSTICK NEW VS OLD FORMULA

A few month ago I noticed Sephora started listing Kat Von D Studded Lipsticks on sale. I was really taken aback because the lipsticks were very popular and I couldn't imagine why the brand would discontinue the range. And as I am typing this post, I am more taken aback of the fact it didn't dawn on me that the clearance was due to reformulation.

Sometimes my brain just doesn't function very well...

I was one of the lucky ones to receive the new Kat Von D Studded Lipstick through Influenster and lo and behold, I was even luckier to receive the shade OG Lolita*. I asked on Instagram if any of you were interested in a comparison post between the old and new formula and a few of you said yes so here we are today with another product smackdown.

Take note that the comparison above is between OG Lolita* and Cathedral because the latter is the only full size Studded Lipstick that I own. I wanted to show the differences with logo and the amount of product.

I'm glad that they decided to keep the same packaging and the only difference is the KVD logo but want to know the best part about the new formulation? The price has gone down and you get more product too. If I'm not mistaken the old formula was retailing for C$26.00 and you got 0.10oz/3g worth of product and the new formula is retailing for only C$23.00 with 0.12oz/3.4g worth of product! I don't think I've ever seen a brand relaunch and decide to give more product with a lower price.

SHADE (this section edited as I previously had no idea there are 3 different shades of Lolita; Lolita II, OG Lolita & Lolita)
The pictures below are to show the differences between the two Lolita shades.

I much prefer Lolita which is a mauvey nude instead of OG Lolita* which is a pale, browny nude. 😞

FORMULA
The new formulation offers three new finishes; metallic, shimmer and satin while the previous one was very matte. The new ones also promise to be the creamiest, most cushion-y and unbelievably pigmented lipstick to ever grace your lips.

Uhm....no.

To be perfectly honest, upon application I find very little difference between the old and new formula. OG Lolita* still tugs a little on my lips and I find it to be only slightly creamier than the original. I also don't find it to be any more pigmented than the original and the main difference I noticed was the finish; satin matte instead of matte. OG Lolita* also doesn't last as long as it doesn't last a full meal and will fade after snacking and drinking. I get a maximum of 4 - 5 hours wear with it and then I need to reapply or touch up.

So is the new formulation a winner? Yes and no. I love that it wears more comfortably but I am not happy that it's not as long lasting. Personally I have always been a fan of the old formula so I guess this new formulation didn't quite do it for me.

KAT VON D Studded Kiss Crème Lipstick is available to purchase through Sephora for US$19.00/C$23.00.

*I received these products for free courtesy of Influenster and but my thoughts and opinions are 100% unbiased, honest and my own. There is no place for any sort of BS here.
